Performance opportunities for students of all ages and skill levels.
Most student’s practice happens alone. We’re working to bring opportunities to the Tacoma area to put that practice in context and give students the opportunity to hear and feel what it means to be a collaborative musician.
Some of the ways we accomplish this mission are through our programs for music students of any age and any skill level who want to experience the joy of a shared musical experience. No competition needed- just a registration fee that pays for a portion of the costs needed to run these programs. We often provide scholarship funds as well.
String Orchestra Concerto Festival
Featuring music students with live string ensemble.
The String Orchestra Concerto Festival is the perfect “next step” for musicians with some experience in a collaborative ensemble wanting to try their hand at performing as a soloist. In this event, student musicians perform as a soloist with 10+ collaborative string musicians (violin, viola, cello, and bass) led by a conductor.
In this format, students can perform simple to complex pieces at a wide variety of skill levels and hear how the solo line fits in with the blend of the ensemble. Many pedagogical pieces, and even high-level concertos are composed for soloist and string orchestra.
Symphonic Orchestra Concerto Festival
Our biggest event of the year!
The Symphonic Orchestra Concerto Festival is TMC’s flagship event. In this event, we bring soloists together with collaborative musicians who form a full 30+ piece symphonic orchestra to support our students. This is a culminating experience for many students who have spend months learning a piece individually. Coming together with all the unique sounds of the orchestra is a full-circle moment.
Some pedagogical pieces and countless concertos and other solo pieces are composed for soloist and symphonic orchestra, ranging from 15-30+ musicians needed to create the full sound. TMC brings all those musicians together to support students ready to practice the confidence needed to perform and celebrate the joy of hearing the composer’s original intention for how the music was to be played.
CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL
Featuring music students with collaborative musicians to form a trio consisting of violin, cello, and piano
The Fall Trio Festival is the secondary event for TMC, and occurs in late October. In this event, soloists are brought together with two other collaborative musicians to form what is called a “piano trio” – a violinist, a cellist, and a pianist. For these small ensembles, there is no conductor – all three musicians will work in sync collaboratively. This festival is often held around Halloween time, so many students play festive and spooky music. This festival is most often held at First Lutheran Church here in Tacoma.
